Islandwide Curbside Recycling Measures Passes

HONOLULU (KHNL) -- The Honolulu City Council voted to establish curbside recycling for all of Oahu by Feb. 1, 2009.

Pilot curbside recycling programs recently began in Mililani and Hawaii Kai.

Under the measure that received unanimous approval, the city would eliminate a second weekly trash pickup in Mililani and Hawaii Kai that is now free.

However, beginning in January, the city is allowed to charge Mililani residents an optional $10-per-month fee for the second pickup.

The measure enables the city to phase in the islandwide program, meaning some areas could be subject to curbside recycle ahead of others.
