Road to Summit Closed Due to Snow

HONOLULU (AP) - Snow and ice forced the closure of the road to the summit of Mauna Kea on the Big Island.

The public was being turned back at the 13,000-foot level because of hazardous driving conditions along Mauna Kea Access Road.

There were up to four inches of snow on summit roads and some drifting of three to four feet deep.

Officials say snow removal operations that began Monday morning may continue until sunset.

The summit road cannot be opened until snow removal operations are completed.
