HONOLULU (KHNL) - More than 300 volunteers spent this Aloha Frida making our island paradise greener!

Elementary school students, joined members of the U.S. Air Force, and other community leaders to plant more than 50 indiginous trees at Hickam Air Force Base.

Friday's festitivies are sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation.

The National Foundation is recognizing Hickam Air Force Base, as part of its "Tree City USA" program.

'Trees are important for us because trees filter air and they take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen which we breathe, said Mikayla McCready, a 3rd grader at Hickam Elementary school.  "And them make our whole planet beautiful and green."

People donated all of the trees and labor involved in Friday's planting.
