Haiku Used Motor Oil Collection Site Closed

WAILUKU (KHNL) - The used motor oil collection site at the Haiku Parts Plus store on Haiku Road is closed due to the sale of the building.

Environmental officials are urging the public to consider the heavy consequences of leaving behind used motor oil. 

They want to remind residents that leaving used motor oil is a class C felony offense that carries a fine of up to $25,000 per day, per offense.

"The legal repercussions are stiff, and any environmental damage can have long-lasting effects. Just one quart of motor oil can contaminate 250,000 gallons of precious drinking water, and is toxic to pets and wildlife," said Maui County Recycling Specialist Irene Cordell.  "It takes decades for oil to decompose, and it can cost taxpayers thousands of dollars to clean up a relatively small spill."

Containers approved for transporting used motor oil for recycling are available free of charge at many oil recycling sites. 

Used motor oil in clean containers can be safely recycled at the following permitted collection sites during normal hours of operation:

Upcountry:

Calasa Service Station, 4836 Lower Kula Rd.

Monday - Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Upcountry Maui Transmission, 34111 Old Haleakala Hwy.

Monday - Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Kahului:

Maui Oil Change and Tune Up, at the intersection of Wakea and Puunene Avenues Monday - Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m.-noon

Parts Plus Kahului, 305A Dairy Road (behind Down to Earth) Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; Saturday & Sunday, 8 a.m.-2 p.m.

NAPA United Auto Parts, 90 E. Wakea Ave.
