Big Island Firefighters Continue to Battle Brushfires

SOUTH KOHOLA (KHNL) - Big island firefighters are still battling several brushfires north of Kona. Two of the nine fires that started Sunday morning continue to burn, and are not yet contained.

One is located near Puako and the other along the Akoni Pule Highway.

Spencer Beach Park also remains closed.

Officials say these fires do not pose any immediate danger to homes, but residents say the fires are getting dangerously close.

"We went to the roof of the structures where we live and watched the advancement of the fire heading toward the orchid and at one point getting really close to the house," said Puako resident, Scott Pratson.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has authorized the use of federal funds to help fight the Puako wild land brush fire.

The funds would go to pay for 75% of the eligible firefighting costs.
