Senate Passes Superferry Bill

HONOLULU (KHNL) - The State Senate approves a bill to allow the Hawaii Superferry to restart operations while an environmental statement is prepared.

Only five senators voted against the bill, while 20 voted yes.

The measure allows the Hawaii Superferry to sail from Oahu to Maui and Kauai while placing a few minor conditions on it to protect endangered humpback whales and prevent the spread of invasive species.

The vote is a significant hurdle for the bill as the House had already signaled a willingness to approve similar legislation.

The bill now goes to the House for further consideration.
