Land mine found in Kapaa

KAPAA, Kauai (KHNL) - Crew workers found a land mine Tuesday while doing trench work at Lihi park in Kapaa.

A team of experts from the U.S. Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit flew to Kauai Wednesday morning to examine the mine.

Officials say it is not known how long the device, about 10-inches in diameter, had been in the ground.

The ordnance disposal team confirmed it was an M-6 land mine.  They buried the device in the sand at the north end of Moana Kai Beach and detonated it by remote control.
