(KHNL) - He was known as a quiet professional who answered the call to serve his country as a Navy Seal.
Monday, he was posthumously awarded -- the medal of honor.
A deliberate heroic act cost him his life as a group of more than one hundred Taliban fighters killed Pearl Harbor based Navy Seal Lieutenant Michael Murphy.
His parents were presented with the medal of honor.
He is the first Navy Seal to be awarded this service medal since the Vietnam War. Members of his unit here in Hawaii watched the ceremony and remembered his sacrifice.
"Within the command itself we are honored that one of our fallen team mates has received the medal of honor for his heroic actions his actions and those who were with him and those who have gone before him are never far from our thoughts," said Commander Randy West of the U.S. Navy.
At their base in Pearl City, commanders unveil a new plaque honoroing Lt. Murphy and his fellow Pearl Harbor based seals who were killed in Afghanistan during this mission.
