HONOLULU (KHNL) - The price of elder care in America is soaring. And that's our Talk Story for Sunday night.

What would you do if you found out your rent was going to triple next month and you couldn't afford it? That's the problem Caroline Stender is facing. She needs 24 hour care.

She's been living at Lunalilo Home for 5 years. Her social security and retirement checks offset her $1400 a month fee. But in a letter her family got last week, the price is about to go up to $3600 next month. Her children, Lolly Suwa and George Stender, are worried about what to do now.

Stender says, "Mom has dementia and when she was staying here she'd forget she took medication. Nobody's here during the day, everyone works. She was overmedicating herself."

Stender estimates 17 other kupuna received the same letter. We called Lunalilo Home today but the managers don't work on Sundays.
