Big Rig Crash Snarls Nimitz Highway Traffic

KALIHI (KHNL) -- A tractor trailer crashes on busy Nimitz Highway, causing a traffic nightmare.

Good news for drivers Wednesday night, as all lanes on Nimitz are now open.

At about 11 am, a big rig flipped on its side at the Sand Island Access Road intersection. Police say the 51-year-old driver took the turn too quickly, his load of metal pallets shifted, and the tractor trailer then toppled over.

The crash damaged the overhead traffic signals, forcing officers to shut down the entire West-bound side of Nimitz and re-route traffic.

"This simple carelessness by the driver, you know, that has disrupted the traffic pattern here," Maj. Kurt Kendro, Honolulu Police Department, said. "And just be cautious is what we're asking all drivers to do."

Paramedics say they took the driver to the Queen's Medical Center, where he was treated for minor injuries and released. Police say they did not cite or arrest him.

Crews removed the overhead traffic signals on the West-bound side, and set up temporary lights.

The lane closure lasted about four hours.
