Coast Guard Monitoring Fuel Removal from Research Vessel

HONOLULU (KHNL) -- The Coast Guard is monitoring the removal of nearly 4,400 gallons of diesel fuel that has leaked Thursday from a University of Hawaii research vessel moored at Sand Island Treatment Plant.

The master of the Kaimikai-O-Kanaloa contacted the Coast Guard at about 11:45 AM Friday. The master reported fuel was leaking into the water due to a crack in the fuel tank.

All crewmembers are safe with no report of injuries.

The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the accident.
