Rain Prevents Divers from Searching for Missing Hiker

HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK (KHNL) - Divers were unable to search for a missing hiker in Haleakala National Park Monday because of continued rain and swollen streams.

Park spokesman Dominic Cardea says the area, located at the convergence of the Palekea and Pipiwai streams, has been closed to swimmers for three weeks.

Authorities say 27-year-old Edward Pedrick Jr. of Kihei apparently jumped into a rain-swollen stream during a hike Saturday.

He was reported missing by two fellow hikers in Oheo Gulch near Hana.
