Kohala Schools Close Due to Water Problems

(KHNL) - People living in and around Kohala on the Big Island are being asked to conserve water.

Department of Water Supply officials on Hawaii island say a pump at the North Kohala well broke down Sunday afternoon.

As a result, Kohala Elementary, Intermediate and High Schools will be closed Monday.

Residents are being asked to use water only for their most basic needs like bathing and cooking.

Officials are also cautioning people not to drink the tap water.  If you must drink it, boil it for one minute before using it for drinking or cooking.

Officials set up water tankers at the county public works baseyard on Hoea Road, and at the top of Hawi Hill Hoad at the HELCO substation.

The department expects repairs to be finished by Tuesday.
