KHNL Announces New Weekday Newscast

HONOLULU (KHNL) - KHNL NBC 8 will launch an 11 a.m. weekday newscast on December 3, 2007, KHNL/KFVE General Manager John Fink announced Thursday.  KHNL News 8 at 11 will be 30-minutes long and will be anchored by current KHNL News 8 Today morning anchor Kristine Uyeno.

"There is a huge void in the marketplace for news viewers between 8 AM and 5 PM locally, and this newscast will help to fill that need, " said  Fink. "By adding our 'live, local, late-breaking' news brand to the midday time period, we will give people at home a chance to catch up on up-to-the-minute local, national and international news."

The number of people watching local TV at 11 AM during weekdays is similar to the number of people who watch in the early morning hours, and currently most local stations air paid programs from 11 AM to noon. "We believe there is an underserved audience who would like to watch a regular local newscast in the midday", added Fink. "We will continue to look for time periods to provide a news product that reflects viewer interest".

KHNL News 8 at 11 will also be videostreamed live at so that people at work and those who do not have access to a television set can keep up with local and worldly happenings without having to wait for 5 PM newscasts.

"We're excited to bring Hawaii viewers an additional newscast during a time of the day when there's a lot happening locally, around the country and around the world," said KHNL/KFVE News Director Dan Dennison.  "By live streaming KHNL News 8 at 11, thousands of people can catch up with developing stories right at their desks".

"Viewer habits and usage of media has seen more change in the past five years than in the previous 20 years", said Fink, "and we plan to continue to explore the best means to provide information to our local community on-air and online with the realization that traditional  media must continually adapt."
