OAKLAND, California (KHNL) - Two hundred Hawaii-based Marines are back in the islands after running into some turbulence at Oakland International Airport Tuesday afternoon.

The marines were returning from Iraq to Kaneohe when they made a two-hour lay over in Oakland.

Instead of being welcomed into the airport terminal, the troops were kept in a separate area where the airlines stow extra baggage.

Airport officials said the marines were not allowed to enter the terminal because they had not been properly screened at other airports where the jet had stopped. The Port of Oakland, which runs the airport, is apologizing.

"I totally understand and respect how they feel and that's why we're here and we want to demonstrate and have members of military understand and hopefully believe that our commitment is solid and to make sure that this doesn't happen again," said Port of Oakland Executive Director, Omar Benjamin.

All sides say they will work together to make sure this type of situation does not happen again.
