Special Olympians Receive Free Medical Screenings

MANOA (KHNL) - Half a dozen volunteer doctors are making it possible for dozens of special olympians to keep competing.  About 100 athletes had a free medical screening Friday.

The screenings include a medical history assessment, blood pressure measurements, and recommendations for follow up care.

Previous screenings have found that special olympians have a higher incidence of gum disease, hearing problems and need glasses.

"Our athletes need to go through a physical exam to make sure they are OK and we do this free of charge as well," said Nancy Bottelo, Special Olympics Hawaii President.

Special Olympics Hawaii serves nearly 2,000 athletes in the state.
