Woman Dies in Downhill Bicycle Accident

HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK, Maui (KHNL) - A woman visiting from Ohio, died in a downhill bicycle accident on Maui Wednesday morning.

The accident occurred at about 10:00 AM.  Witnesses say the woman was riding downhill at the 7,000 ft level of Haleakala National Park when she lost control of her bicycle and collided with an up-bound tour van.  The van tried to stop but struck the victim.

Emergency officials responded with life support and applied an Automated Electronic Deliberator but were unsuccessful.

The woman was pronounced dead just before 11:00 AM.

Officials stopped traffic in both lanes and closed the Road to Summit for several hours.

Officials have since re-opened the road.
