Big Island Man, Woman Killed in Head-On

(KHNL) - A 48-year-old Big Island man and 57-year-old woman are dead following a head-on collision in South Kohala.

The crash occurred on Route 190, in the area of the 4-mile marker a little after midnight Sunday morning. According to police, the male was driving a pick-up truck and traveling in the Waimea direction when he crossed the center line and collided head-on with a vehicle being operated by the woman. She was traveling in the Kona direction.

The man is identified as Randy W. Ahuna and the female is identified as Charlotte L. Paris.

Ahuna was taken to the North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he was later pronounce dead. Paris died at the scene and was taken to the Kona Community Hospital.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.

Police do not believe speed or alcohol were factors in the crash, but believe driver fatigue may have played a factor.

This is the 28th and 29th traffic fatalities on the Big Island this year compared to 27 at the same time last year.
