State Flags to Fly at Half-Staff to Honor Former Kauai Mayor

HONOLULU (KHNL) - Governor Linda Lingle has ordered state flags at state and county buildings to fly at half-staff on Saturday, September 15 from sunrise to sunset, in honor of former Kauai County Mayor Eduardo Malapit, who died on August 27.

"Mayor Malapit will be remembered for his contributions to the community and his commitment to improving the quality of life on Kaua'i," said Governor Lingle.  "His dedication to public service and his active involvement in the local community, especially in youth sports and activities, serve as examples for all of us to follow."

Malapit served as Mayor of Kauai County for four consecutive two-year terms (1974-1982).  He was the first mayor of Filipino ancestry in the United States.
