Two Brothers Arrested in Connection with Brushfires in Kauai

LIHUE, Kauai (KHNL) - Two brothers are in police custody Wednesday morning following a series of brushfires in Puhi and Lihue that began at 10:30 Tuesday night.

Police say 24-year-old Joshua Wong and his 25-year-old brother, Michael Wong Jr. of Hanamaulu were arrested at 3:04 Wednesdaymorning after calls from witnesses led police to the Niumalu area where the brothers were located. They were charged with second degree arson.

Fire crews responded to eight brushfires that broke out Tuesday night between 10:30 and 2:45 am. including two locations on Halehaka Road in Puhi, Kaneka Street in Puhi, Ahukini Road near the Kapule Highway junction, Kuhio Highway across from the Roberts Hawaii Tours base yard, Hanamaulu Road, Isenberg Park and Lala Road near Kauai High School.

All fires except for the one off Ahukini Road are fully extinguished. Firefighters are on scene putting out hot spots. Some of the small fires were put out by responding police officers.
