KAILUA (KHNL) - Things are really heating up for the Warrior football team.
A spot in the national polls, and led by a potential Heisman trophy contender.
And although success may have eluded former Hawaii coach, Fred Von Appen, his son, Cody is doing his best to carry on the family name.
For Cody Von Appen, sometimes avoiding questions about his dad, is tougher than sidestepping an oncoming pass rush.
"Yeah people talk about it. He coached UH and they didn't do so good but I'm proud of my dad," said the younger Von Appen.
These days the Kalaheo senior is busy representing the family name on the Hawaii High School gridiron.
As the starting quarterback for the hard charging Mustang offense.
"He wants to do it all if he can, if he could right now he'd play for a college team and skip his senior year," said Kalaheo Head Coach, Chris Mellor. "He's definitely a double threat guy and he wants to do it all.
"Like throwing but runnings good too when you can rely on yourself," Von Appen said. "We have a cool offense so we can do a lot of things."
As for what awaits after high school.
The all OIA 1st teamer has his sights set on his dad's old stomping grounds on the Manoa campus.
"Oh I would love to play for UH they have a good offense. It would be good to just keep on the family name and play there too."
