PALOLO (KHNL) - It's a day of celebration for the Hawaiian Language Immersion Program in Department of Education. September 4th marks the 20 years of the program.
Parents, children and alumni gathered to celebrate.
The first classrooms were opened at Waiau and Keaukaha Elementary Schools.
Lessons are taught completely in Hawaiian.
"Especially for the Hawaiian children it gives them more of a foundation, a base of who they are, and what they're about. And we see the success in that and the positive self esteem that they have," said teacher Kaui Keola
The program has come a long way over the years.
It started with less than 20 students. Now there up are close to a thousand islandwide, with classes getting larger each year.
