Copper Thief Receives Punishment

HONOLULU (KHNL) -- An Oahu man convicted of stealing copper from a Honolulu Board of Water Supply facility was sentenced to five years in prison Tuesday.

Michael Handy was convicted of criminal property damage, theft and trespassing in the city's first copper case to go to trial.

Police arrested Handy at the pumping station on Kapahulu Avenue last year. Prosecutors say a witness saw him on the roof of the building removing copper gutters.

A judge also ordered Handy to pay $4,500 in restitution.
