Big Island Man Dies in Crash

HOOKENA, Hawaii (KHNL) - One man is dead after crashing his vehicle on Hawaii Belt Road in the Hookena area of South Kona.

According to Kona police, a Ford sedan was traveling south on Hawaii Belt Road when the driver lost control, crossed the center line and struck and embankment.

A male passenger was transported to the Kona Community Hospital. His condition is unknown.

It is unknown if speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash, police say.

This is the 26th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year, compared to 25 at the same time last year.
