Superferry Suspends Travel to Kauai

HONOLULU (KHNL) - Officials with the Hawaii Superferry announced Tuesday afternoon that they will suspend travel to Kauai indefinitely.

This announcement came after Governor Linda Lingle announced that the Hawaii Superferry Alakai would not travel to Kauai on Tuesday afternoon. The governor asked Superferry officials to cancel the trip because of the concern for pubic safety.

The announcement came after two nights of violent protests on the Garden Isle. On Monday night, about 65 opponents to the ferry on surfboards, canoes and kayaks formed a human blockade and forced the Superferry to turn back to Honolulu. 11 were arrested by Kauai police.

Sunday, protestors delayed the docking of the Alakai by about an hour. Three people were arrested on Sunday.
