NOAA Charges Vessel Owner with Unlawful Fishing

(KHNL) - The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration charged the owner and operator of a U.S. vessel with unlawfully fishing in the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument.

Robert Flores is charged with three counts of entering the monument and unlawfully harvesting monument resources.  He's also charged with possessing fishing gear that was not stowed or unavailable for use and failing to possess a valid Hawaii longline permit.

This case is the first federal enforcement action taken since President Bush declared the area around the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands a marine national monument on June 15, 2006.
