(KHNL) - Four Hawaii students are among the 400 semifinalists representing 44 states to compete in Discovery Channel's Young Scientist Challenge.
The challenge is the nation's premier science contest for students in grades 5 through 8.
Hawaii's semifinalists are: John Douglas Haswell of Hilo (Hilo Intermediate School), Roya Sabri of Kailua-Kona (West Hawaii Exploration Academy), Zoe Sims of Kailua-Kona (Kealakehe Middle School) and Tyler Yamada of Kula (Iao Intermediate School)
The 40 students who go on to qualify as finalists will tackle some of the planet's most significant environmental challenges with the winner chosen in Washington D.C. in October.
The challenge is in it's ninth year. It's designed to encourage the exploration of science during the critical middle school year.
