Victims in Car Accident at Haleakala National Park Identified

HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK (KHNL) -  Officials have identified the survivor and victims that were killed Thursday when their car plunged 15 feet off the side of a road in Haleakala National Park on Maui.

The driver and sole survivor is 60-year-old Bernard Ortolan from Sceanx, France.  His wife, 58-year-old Anne Verger, was declared dead at the scene.

The second victim was 65-year-old Rolande Andina from Paris, France.

The third victim was 49-year-old Philippe Chaigneau also from Paris, France.  Chaigneau is survived by his wife and two children who were traveling in a separate car.

The single car accident happened at milepost 13.2 on Crater Road.  The car was headed down from the summit of the park.  Officials believe Ortolan most likely fell asleep at the wheel and veered off the road.

The survivor and victims were traveling with seven others as part of a tour group from France.
