Big Island Brush Fire

By: Walter Makaula

(KHNL) - The dry conditions on the Big Island are helping to fuel a brush fire in South Kohala. The fire forced officials to evacuate homes for much of the day. Big Island Civil Defense says the fire started just after two Thursday afternoon along Highway 250. Strong winds are pushing the fire down the mountain towards Kawaihae road. The flames were too much of a danger for residents in the Kamuela View Estates area as they were eventually told to evacuate. "There were people walking away from their homes, a lot of the people walking to the scene to see what was going on and then going back to check on their houses and see how close it was" says Kamuela resident Carolyn Blake The evacuation is now over - and residents have been told it's safe to return to their homes. Highway 250 is also now open. But all residents and motorists in the area are asked to be on the alert for smoke and fire hazards. The fire has so far burned about 160 acres.
