Council Focuses on Wildfire Prevention

HONOLULU (KHNL) - The wildfire in Waialua prompted Honolulu council to renew focus on rural Oahu fire prevention.

Councilmembers Dela Cruz and Apo introduce a new bill that requires owners of agricultural land bordering residential property to maintain a fire-break to prevent threats pose by wildfires to rural communities.

"We're a rural, farming, community and therefore, we face unique challenges," said Dela Cruz.  "This will make our rural communities much safer from wildfires in the long run."

Similar legislation was introduced in 2002.
