Kuaokala, Mokuleia Forest Reserves Closed Due to Wildfire

HONOLULU (KHNL) - The Department of Land and Natural Resources closed the Kuaokala and Mokuleia forest reserves atop the Waianae mountain range Tuesday because of an approaching wildfire that has already burned about 3,500 acres above Waialua.

The fire entered into the northeast edges of the Mokuleai Forest Reserve and the Kaala Natural Area Reserve Monday night.  It is also threatening the endangered species-rich Pahole Natural Area Reserve.

In anticipation of continued high winds from Hurricane Flossie, DLNR officials say the forest reserves will remained closed indefinitely.
