Killer to Be Released After Mental Treatment

HILO (KHNL) - A man who was found not guilty by reason of insanity for killing his girlfriend is set to be released from the state mental hospital.

Fifty-nine-year-old Curtis Kealoha was deemed fit for conditional release from the Hawaii State Hospital, where he lived since October 1996.

A judge found him not guilty be reason of insanity for the 1994 murder of 49-year-old Victoria Agres.

Circuit Judge Glen Hara reviewed reports from three doctors on Kealoha and signed a request for his conditional release on July 18.

Kealoha will live in a group home on Oahu and be monitored at all hours.

Prosecutors argue Kealoha is still a danger to the public and especially to women.

From 1997 to 2004, records show Kealoha has been involved in at least eight incidents involving attacks or threats on staffers and other patients.
