Army's Examination of Ordnance at Landfill Completed

MOLOKAI (KHNL) -- The Molokai landfill is re-opened earlier than expected, after the Army deems the location safe.

The landfill was shut down Monday, after workers discovered several dozen pieces of military ordnance dumped there. An Army unit arrived at the site Wednesday afternoon to begin examining the items, which were described as scrap metal from practice rockets and bombs.

County officials say they were able to re-open the landfill Thursday, and can resume normal trash pick-up.

The investigation into how the ordnance wound up there continues.
