WAIANAE (KHNL) - Next Monday, the new school year kicks off for thousands of public school children.

Hundreds of students on the westside of Oahu are heading back well-prepared, thanks to a generous donation.

Employees from Prudential Locations and Women in Need delivered 300 backpacks, filled with school supplies, to kids in need.

They handed them out to elementary and high school students who live on the beach and at three different shelters, including Ohana Ola. This is the sixth year the groups have reached out to homeless kids.

"Of course the children are our growth and our future so we wanted to make sure they had every opportunity to have all of the tools they need for their education," said Mary Robb, realtor.

This donation encourages these little guys to reach for the stars.

"Words cannot express how I feel. We're just thankful and very grateful to be in a place that helps us," said Jeanette Hanawahine, parent.

Kids on Maui also received 100 backpacks for the upcoming school year. In the past six years, more than 1,000 children have received these school supplies.

"It's a very small thing to do in terms of dollars but it goes a long way in helping them be successful," said Robb.
