Kahaualea Natural Area Reserve Closed Due to Volcanic Activity

KAHAUALEA, Hawaii (KHNL) - The entire Kahaualea Natural Area Reserve is closed due to a shift in eruptive activity at Kilauea Volcano.

Officials say the present lava flow within the Kahaualea NAR is extremely dangerous.  They say the entire area around Pu'u O'o is also hazardous.

The new eruption continues in the area of Pu'u Kahaualea and Kupaianaha and has formed a number of perched lava ponds.

Toxic fumes from the eruptive activity also pose a health hazardous.

Officials are asking everyone to stay out of the area.
