Congresswoman Hirono Defends Funding for Native Hawaiian Housing

WASHINGTON, D.C. (KHNL) -  Congresswoman Mazie Hirono fends off a surprise effort by Republicans to strip funding for a Native Hawaiian housing program Tuesday.

"Clearly, there is now a concerted and persistent attack by some Republicans in Congress on Native Hawaiian programs," said Congresswoman Hirono. "This is very troubling.  I will challenge attacks of this sort on programs that benefit the people of Hawaii, including Native Hawaiians."

The House voted to defeat an amendment that would have eliminated all funding for the Native Hawaiian Housing Block Grant.  The grant provides affordable housing for Native Hawaiian families who are eligible to live on Hawaiian Home Lands.
