MOANALUA VALLEY (KHNL) - Some emergency sirens sounded off on Oahu but it was a only a test.

Friday morning, crews tested two sirens near Mckinley High School and Moanalua Valley.

Emergency officials rely on the the sirens to alert residents of any emergency announcements..

"People living closer would be able to find out there was no immediate threat and pass the word on down to the neighbors and that would calm a lot of nerves for people that would be tense," said emergency official Harold Buckle. "With the new sirens, we're also required that they be voice capable, that in the event there's a total power outage, there's no need for a siren sounding but we can at least get an announcement to the public."

Emergency officials have upgraded all sirens after an earthquake rocked the islands last October.
