HONOLULU (KHNL) -- The parents of a girl found malnourished in a Honolulu apartment earlier this year say they're not guilty of trying to kill her.

Melvin and Denise Wright were arraigned by video hook-up from the Oahu Community Correctional Center. They're charged with attempted murder.

Paramedics rushed to an apartment on Kinau Street in January, and found the emaciated child. Sources say the 12-year-old weighed about 40 pounds, the weight of a healthy five-year-old.

"This is the most heinous, egregious, I don't know what other adjectives you can use, of disregard of human life by anybody, parents or otherwise," Maurice Arrisgado, deputy prosecutor, said. "She's never seen a doctor since she was 10 months old, never been to a dentist, never been to school as far as I know."

The Wrights remain in custody, each unable to post $100,000 bail. Trial is set for September.
