HONOLULU (KHNL) - A local star is celebrating a big birthday and a million dollar facelift.

A massive lei drapes the front of the "Star of Honolulu" as the company celebrates its 50th anniversary in the islands.

On board, guests celebrated with a private lunch and party and check out the ship's new interior.

The star is in the middle of $1 million worth of renovations.

And the company plans to bring another ship to Hawaii.

"We have some plans for the future bringing the new boat called Hokunai`a, he's currently in Billingham, Washington and will be leaving for Honolulu next week and starting operations in October on Oahu," said Ronald Howard, President of Star of Honolulu.

Every year about 450,000 people enjoy activities such as whale watching cruises and sunset dinners by the Star of Honolulu and her sister ships.
