Big Island Brush Fire Update

By: Walter Makaula

(KHNL) -  Dry brush helps flames on the Big Island spread quickly.

This fire has consumed more than 9,000 acres; Hawaii County Civil Defense says it's 90 percent contained.

All of the roads that had been shut down earlier because of the fire have been re-opened.

The fire has been burning since Sunday above a remote area near Waikoloa Village.

No homes or structures have ever been in danger. Investigators say, it appears the fire was deliberately set.

Fire crews have been building fire breaks, and helicopters were out Monday dropping water on the fire.

Again, the fire is burning in an area that is not close to any homes, therefore, evacuations were never needed.

Crews did, however,  close Mamalahoa Highway for much of the day, cutting off the main road between Waimea and Kailua, Kona.

At this time, there are no suspects in custody. But authorities are asking that you call Hilo or Kona police if you have any information about this case.
