WAIKIKI (KHNL) - Beachgoers were in for a surprise Wednesday, when they came across dead aholehole, or Hawaiian flagtail fish, floating helplessly on shore.

"I saw a dead fish so I just went to go throw it away, but then another person came up and told me that their was hundreds of dead fish on the shoreline so we're packing up and we are going to a different beach," explained beach goer Michelle Brown.

"Well I just walked and people were coming out of the water and they said there's a lot of dead fishes around so I came to check this site and I haven't gone in the water yet," said beach goer George Takenaga.

According to the Department of Health, there is no cause for concern and the fish died from natural causes.

However the Department of Land and Natural Resources believes the fish were dumped after being caught in illegal nets.
