Search For Missing Swimmer Suspended

KILAUEA POINT, Kauai (KHNL) - Rescue teams have suspended their search off the north shore of Kauai for a missing swimmer late Monday night.

The Coast Guard and Kauai Fire Department have been searching for 42-year-old Roy Overstreet of Bellingham, Washington.

Overstreet was swimming at Larson's Beach with his wife, Cara Jaye, when they were swept out to sea.  Jaye made it back to shore but Overstreet was swept further out.

Rescue crews covered an area roughly the size of Molokai completing four separare flights adding up to roughly 26 hours of flight.

"Suspending the search for a person is never an easy decision," said Cmdr. Barry Compagnoni.  "We discussed all that we did and why we came to the decision with the family.  We always want to have a successful outcome in a search and reunite loved ones, unfortunately that didn't happen in this particular case."

The search has been suspended pending the development of new information.
