Suspect, Victim in Big Island Shooting Identified

PUNA (KHNL) -- We now know the names of the victim and the suspect in Tuesday's deadly shooting in Puna. Wednesday, Hawaii County police identified the victim as 28-year-old Jeremy Napoleon of Keaau.

The shooting happened in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision. Officers found Napoleon with a gunshot wound to his chest.

Investigators say the suspect died a few hours later, after he crashed his truck on Akoni Pule Highway. He's identified as 45-year-old Noel Smith of Kurtistown.

Police say a firearm was recovered at the crash site in North Kohala. Detectives haven't been able to confirm whether it was used in the shooting in Puna.

Police are also investigating the relationship between the two men and the causes of the shooting and accident.

Autopsies are scheduled for Friday.
