KALIHI (KHNL) -- An apparent murder-attempted suicide rocks a quiet Kalihi neighborhood. An elderly woman is stabbed to death, while her husband is rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
A grieving woman's knees buckle, as she's comforted outside an Akina Street home. Inside the multi-unit house, a 63-year-old woman is dead.
"It was a big noise there, a big scream," Juliet Mendoza, neighbor, said. "I feel nervous. What's that? What's going on? But we can not see anything. We just hear the big scream."
Police say the victim was stabbed in her upper body. She's found in a bedroom.
Paramedics rush her 62-year-old husband to the hospital. Sources say he has a cut to his wrist and is expected to survive.
"There's knives in the home," Lt. Bill Kato, Honolulu Police Department, said. "So, but we don't know if they're weapons yet."
Mendoza describes her next-door neighbors as quiet. She's shocked by what's happened.
"I'm surprised. I get chicken skin. I don't know what to say now," she said. "I can't believe it. I was just talking with her yesterday. She washing all white towels, and then I was even telling her, 'Oh, you have new haircut today. You look good with your haircut.'"
Investigators could not immediately say if there's a history of domestic violence between the couple.
"We'd have to go back and check into our files for that," Kato said. "But right now, we don't know."
