Suspect Charged in Puna Stabbing

HILO, Hawaii (KHNL) - Hilo Police have filed charges against a 38-year-old man related to a stabbing incident in the Ainaloa Subdivision in Puna.

Tyrone Vesperas was charged Wednesday morning for the murder of his 14-year-old son and the attempted murder of his estranged wife.  He is being held at the Hilo Police Station without bail.

On Monday at about 11:30, Puna Patrol Officers responded to a 911 call from a person who said he had been stabbed.  When officers arrived at the home, they found Tyrone Vesperas in the garage and the lifeless body of Tyran Vesperas-Sainiatan. 

A second 911 call was made by 34-year-old Cheryl-Lyn Vesperas, who said she was stabbed in the abdomen by her husband and had fled in her car.  Cheryl-Lynn Vesperas was in the later stages of a pregnancy.  The unborn child did not survive the assault. Cheryl-Lynn Vesperas is currently at the Hilo Medical Center in stable condition.
