HONOLULU (KHNL) - The new group taking over the Taste of Honolulu wants to continue the great tradition of that event. There will be few changes. But one thing that remains the same is the need for volunteers.
Organizers feel they need close to 2,000volunteers to pull off the massive three day event. And it's all for a good cause.
All Johnny B wanted to do was find a job where he could be productive. For seven years, he got nothing. But after a month at Abilities Unlimited, he got a job as a courtesy clerk.
"Not only the job is great, but the people gave me a place where I felt that I belong," said John Baquing, or Johnny B.
Baquing benefited from the group, that helps those with disabilities find jobs. The group is benefiting from one of the most successful events on the island -- the old Taste of Honolulu, now called the Flavors of Honolulu. But the group needs help.
"As always, it takes quite a few hands to produce an event like Flavors of Honolulu, and we're expecting to need 1500, couple thousand volunteers," said Sam Powell, of Abilities Unlimited.
Johnny B will be there, serving as the event's ambassador.
"I'll be making sure that everybody comes to the Flavors of Honolulu is having a great time and enjoying themselves," said Baquing.
All proceeds from Flavors will go towards Abilities Unlimited.
"The entire staff, at the end of the day when their head hits the pillow, they know they've made a difference in someone's life that day," said Powell.
So helping Flavors will ultimately help guys like Johnny B.
"Through Abilities Unlimited, I found that man should not set limits for himself, cause you can never know how far you can get in life," said Baquing.
