Target Plans Another Oahu Store

SALT LAKE (KHNL) - A major retail giant aims to open another location on Oahu.

Target is expected to open its doors at the former Costco site in Salt Lake.

"Very anxious to have Target here," said Donna MacLaughlin, president, One Fas Lube.

Target plans to be the new anchor tenant. It's been five years since Costco left this site, taking a lot of business with them.

"It's been way down for us, yah," said MacLaughlin.

"Our business took a dive, we dropped off about 50% of our retail business," said Tommy Silva, president, T&T Tinting.

Business owners hope Target will turn things around.

"We're pretty happy. We're glad that they're coming in. It's been kind of a ghost town here and a lot of tenants have left because of that," said Silva.

They haven't talked to Target officials, but realized they had a new landlord after seeing their latest invoice. While tenants are excited about Target's arrival, they wonder if the company will make any changes.

"We're worried about the costs, the rent is undoubtedly going to go up," said Silva.

"We haven't been told anything but we remain positive about the situation," said MacLaughlin.

Earlier this year, Target officials announced plans for a store on Kalaeloa Boulevard at the edge of Kapolei. Both are expected to open in 2009.

Company representatives are expected to unveil more details about the Salt Lake store at a neighborhood board meeting on June 14 at Aliamanu Middle School.
