Molokai Brush Fire 50% Contained

MOLOKAI (KHNL) -  Fire officials announced a brush fire that started Monday afternoon in the Kaluakoi area of Molokai is 50% contained.

Firefighters are dealing with some inaccessible areas where fire continues to burn.  There are no active fire fronts at this time.  Two helicopters have been dispatched to help ground crews.

Light winds and rain throughout the evening helped keep the fire from spreading.

Crews first responded at around 3:30 Monday afternoon and the fire kept growing.

Ground crews were assisted by three helicopters. And earlier Monday evening, nine fire fighters from Maui arrived to help.

An estimated 3,000 acres were burned.  No injuries were reported and no homes are in danger.  The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
