HONOLULU (KHNL) - It's no secret that Hawaii is one of the most expensive places to live in the country.

But it's now the priciest place to vacation.

AAA ranks Hawaii as the most expensive state to visit and Honolulu the priciest city.

A family of four can expect to pay $650 a day to vacation in Hawaii.

"We budgeted $200 a day apart from our accommodations," said Mark Lord, from Australia.

For some vacationers, a Hawaiian vacation is only possible by using airline mileage or hotel points to cut costs.

"For the ocean view, we're paying $50 a night, we use maybe 150,000 points," said Erica Crowley, tourist.

The survey comes at a time when the local tourism industry has declined. And hotel room demand has also dropped. Some people we talked to say the high cost to vacation here, makes them think twice about coming back.

"So yah, we might've went someplace else," said Crowley.

Still, people say the price you pay for paradise is definitely worth it.

"I think it's just something you gotta experience. There's no other place in the world like Hawaii, certainly not that I've been to," said Crowley.

North Dakota was the least expensive state to travel to at $187 per day.
