Defense Secretary Robert Gates Visits Hawaii

CAMP SMITH (KHNL) - U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates visits the islands and says, "America needs to look at the long-term solutions in the Middle East. "

This is the second time in the past two months Gates has visited the Pacific Command.

He and Admiral Timothy J. Keating spoke to reporters Thursday before heading to Singapore for the "Shangrila Dialogue Conference."

Gates says even though the U.S. is fighting the war on terror, it has no intention of neglecting Asia.

"We also need to be looking at the long-term in the region as well as in Iraq and how do we posture ourselves for the long-term both in the region and in Iraq," said Gates.

He says Asian countries play a critical role on the war on terror and serves as allies to the United States.
